Standard Bank of British South Africa Ltd.,
Unique? Waterlow & Sons Ltd. presentation proof set of the newly founded Bank.
The Standard Bank of British South Africa was founded in 1863. In 1883 the term "British" was dropped to reflect its activity in
non-British areas of Southern Africa. Bergman (1971) reports that while a few (5) private banks operating in the Cape issued £4
notes but does not refer to the Standard Bank issuing anything less than a £5. Accordingly it is not known whether the £4
denomination was actually issued. The face and back of each note is mounted on a separate page from a Waterlow & Sons presenta-
tion album which had suffered some water damage. The album, though not intact when acquired by the present owner, contained
vignettes, labels, etc. as well as this set of Standard Bank of British South Africa Ltd., two notes of the Bank of Africa, one Isle of
Man note, and one English private bank note.
