1019 Steamship “Golden Age” Certificate of General Average
from 1864.
San Francisco, California. Certificate of General
Average, 1864, signed by a Notary Public, relating to gold coin and
US currency and the Steamship “Golden Age”. Carries a 25c revenue
stamp. Measures 13.5” by 8”. Excellent condition. The steamship
“Golden Age”, “...having sailed out of Panama and the second day
out from Acapulco, broke her main shaft, which rendered it unsafe
to continue her voyage.... towed to San Francisco”. It appears that
either a 15% charge was placed on the value of the cargo, currency
and coins it carried and evidently charged to the company or it rep<
resents an interest that the second boat earned by taking the cargo
the rest of the journey. Interesting and extremely rare Wells, Fargo
related document. First time seen by cataloger.
