1056 Cyrus Durand Archive Book Unique Vignette Plate #14 From
the “52” Collection.
ND (ca.1820-40’s), 10x10 inch unique artistic
vignette sheet with black engraved portrait of young woman with
bonnet in center inside cycloidal lathe engraved shield surrounded
by a circle all in red, A simple and elegant design that should be
appreciated for it’s artistic merit as well as the knowledge that it was
created by the hand of one of the fathers of security printing in this
country. This page was Page 14 of 96 different pages saved in
Durand’s personal engraving book. All are cut down proofs on india
mounted to card by Durand. Durand was responsible for the direc-
tion that security printing and engraving took in the United States
and was the holder of many patents that allowed the engraver to
practice his art at a new level that made it more difficult to counter-
feit banknotes. (ex The 52 Collection, Part 1, 06-29-10).
