Gold and Silver Lifesaving Medals are two of the oldest medals in the United States and were originally established at the Department of Treasury as Lifesaving Medals First and Second Class. The Department of the Treasury initially gave the award, but today the United States Coast Guard awards it through the Department of Homeland Security. They are not classified as military decorations, and may be awarded to any person. � Est. $70-140 1039 1039World War I Victory Medal with Battle Clasp Quartet, ca.1919 United States, 1919. Bronze medal, Obverse features a winged Victory holding a shield and sword, reverse features “The Great War for Civilization” curved along the top, curved along the bottom are 6 stars, shield at center with U and S on either side of a staff, also lists Allied countries. Also includes a rainbow service ribbon, as well as a quartet of Army or Navy Clasps, with battle’s names which denote the bearer’s participation: Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, and Champagne-Marne. The World War I Victory Medal (originally known as the Victory Medal) was a United States World War I service medal designed by James Earle Fraser. Award of a common allied service medal was recommended by an inter-allied committee in March 1919. Each allied nation would design a ‘Victory Medal’ for award to their military personnel, all issues having certain common features, including a winged figure of victory on the obverse and the same ribbon.
