Hoboken, NJ. $1, 1862, NJ-205- G2a, Wait 796, R-6. The Hudson River Bank was incorporated in 1863 and closed the same year. This note is printed in black(obverse only), with green borders. The central vignette has a nautical scene with a steamboat and three sailing ships. Underneath the central vignette is a large green ‘ONE’ protector. The NJ State Arms is at the lower left, and a woman’s portrait vignette is at the lower right. National BNC. Hoboken, NJ. Lot of 5 Notes, Includes 5cts (2), Issued & Remainder; the balance are all issued including the 10cts, & 15cts, and 25cts, Nov. 1, 1862, Wait 823, 824, 825, & 826, R-4. Five issued pieces. O.H. Wheeler issued scrip during the Civil War. These were redeemable at the Hudson River Bank. All are uniface, printed in green, and all have a sailboat central vignette. the remainder is in Uncirculated condition, the issued notes vary from VG to Fine with toning and wear. The New Jersey Manufacturing and Banking Company was incorporated in 1823 and closed in 1829. The $1 note(Wait 801) has a vignette of Mercury at the top left. A vignette of Lafayette standing is at the right, and a small male portrait is at the left. The $3 note(Wait 809) has a central vignette of Justice standing, with a small oval vignette of Washington at the left and a small oval vignette of Franklin at the right. RW&C, NY. Hopewell, NJ. 5 cents, 1862, Wait Unlisted, Probably R-7. Blackwell Jewett & Co. issued scrip in the 1860s. This issued 5ct piece is printed in red on one side only, with a small dog’s head central vignette. It is similar to Wait 828, which is a 25c scrip(R-7) from the same issuer. Pair of Obsolete Notes. Howell Works, NJ. Lot of 2 Notes, Includes 6 1/4 cents & $1, 1861, Wait 829 & 833, R-6. Two scrip notes, printed in black on one side. The Howell Works Co. had its origin in an establishment called The Monmouth Furnace, in Howell, Monmouth County, NJ(now Allaire). The Howell Works issued both paper scrip and metal tokens in the 1800s. The 6 1/4 c scrip(Wait 829) has a view of the works as a central vignette and a small portrait vignette of Franklin at the left. The $1 scrip (Wait 833) has a view of the works as a central vignette, and a portrait vignette of Franklin at the right. The $1 note is an unissued remainder. The 6 1/4c note may have been partially issued, but the number, date, and signature have been obscured to make it appear unissued, XF-AU, Printed by RWH&C. ����������������������� Est. $70-140 Hudson City 481 481 Highland Bank. 1858. Obsolete Note. Hudson City, NJ. $1, 1858, Wait 837, R-6. The Highland Bank was incorporated in 1863, and closed in 1865. This note is altered from a $1.00 Southern Bank of Bainbridge, GA(Haxby GA-80 G-4A). It has a central vignette of a seated woman feeding a calf. At the lower left, is a vignette of cattle grazing on a hill. At the lower right, is a vignette of a girl leaning on a fence. Jamesburg, NJ. 5 cents, July 15, 1862, Wait 850, R-6. This issued merchant scrip note promises to pay the bearer 5c in current bank bills. It is printed in green on one side. It has a round liberty seated vignette at the left. A small head of Franklin vignette is at the lower center. Obsolete Note. Jersey City, NJ. $1, 1862, Wait 851, R-7. The Bank of America was chartered in 1862 and closed in 1863. The Banker’s Magazine said at the time of its closing ‘After a sickly existence of a few weeks, the bank of America has collapsed. The assets, consisting of a rusty stove, an old table and a candle box, were taken possession of by the Sheriff’. This issued note was printed in black on one side.
