Stock Certificate. Massachusetts, 1855. 2 Shares, I/C, Black text on light blue paper, Issued to and signed by Lucy Stone (August 13, 1818 – October 18, 1893). She was a prominent U.S. orator, abolitionist, and suffragist, and a vocal advocate and organizer promoting rights for women. In 1847, Stone became the first woman from Massachusetts to earn a college degree. She spoke out for women’s rights and against slavery at a time when women were discouraged and prevented from public speaking. Stone was known for using her birth name after marriage, the custom at the time being for women to take their husband’s surname. (From the John E. Vignette of the U.S. Treasury building and text printed in black on bright green border and underprint, S/N 286, plate C, Issued to the Peoples Bank of the City of New York, Assigned to and redeemed by the Union Dime Savings Institution of NY City, Dime sized circular cancel in middle bottom of bond, left margin cut into and barely touching design on right margin. This example is from the Herzog Collection and a great rarity as well as being the highest denomination from the series. Engraved and printed at the Treasury Department, their imprint at the top. Green 10.000 protector. Transfer back framed in blue with black text. Fully issued and transferred bond with several small nicks or chips off the edges and glue strip remnants on the back side edges. Some scattered small tack holes and a small 3mm internal tear near the top right edge of the design. Lovely eye appeal overall. This bond was apparently kept by the Treasury due to the high denomination and rarity of any examples for its records, with pencil notation on the back to that effect. originally purchased by from a 1995 Scott Winslow auction. Once again, its importance can’t be overstated for its fiscal relevance and rarity as a Federal currency related bond. ��������� Est. $15000-20000
