Underneath the title, a well-executed woodcut depicts an artist’s conception of the Mississippi River Valley. There is a vertical fold, and a short repaired edge split, otherwise generally Very Fine. From a Dutch collection of broadsides entitled HET GROOTE TAFEREEL DER DWAASHEID (The Great Mirror of Folly). Like the South Seas Company, John Law’s Mississippi Company was a speculative land scheme that promised an investment in a virtual paradise, but delivered little or nothing for most investors. England, ND (ca.1930-40’s). 19 mounted pencil sketches, pen and ink drawings and watercolors mounted on 9 by 12 inch thin manila card on front and back. Included is a watercolor of Pegasus with two globes and 10 additional pencil sketches of horses, fish, dogs and floral decorations, on the second side there are 8 images, with 7 of them watercolors and ink or pencil of lion and cubs, allegorical man, man with horses, woman athlete and woman in arch with man with hammer and others images. They can probably be soaked, but I did not want to endanger the artwork. Fleury, an artist and designer for Waterlow & Sons, is known for designing stamps for the 1935 King George V Silver Jubilee Issue for England as well as a 1935 Portugal 1000 Escudos Note and a number of Czechoslovakian banknotes used in the 1940’s and also other banknotes and stamps.
