Shahn (189891969)
Ben Shahn was born in Kaunus, Lithuania in
1898. He emigrated to New York with his family in 1906. He later
attended both New York University and the National Academy of
Design from 1917 to 1921. In the 1920s Shahn became part of the
social realism movement. Social Realism came to being with the
Depression of the 1930’s. Shahn came to prominence in the 1930s as
with “The Passion of Sacco and Vanzetti”. Shahn dealt consistently
with social and political themes. His work was on the cover of Time
and well as the Museum of Modern Art. Active until the end of his
career, Shahn was also a distinguished lecturer, teacher, and writer.

47 Alistair Grant (192591997), Lithograph “Black Bottom” 27 x 20
inches.
Alistair Grant was an experimental British printmaker. He
worked in the printmaking department of the Royal College for 35
years (1955 <90), acting as Head of Department 1970 <90 and as
Professor of Printmaking (Emeritus) 1984 <90. The signed litho<
graph: “Black Bottom”, depicts the strong influence of figurative
abstraction and surrealist elements in Grant’s work.

Tschacbasov’s (1899< 1984) prolific 60<year career includes an
incredibly varied and extensive exhibition history. His work is held in
many prestigious public collections, including the Metropolitan
Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn
Museum, the Jewish Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art,
Walker Art Center, and the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers
