Before the Civil War, the city was the site of several educational institutions, including the second school chartered by the state of Arkansas. The Civil War divided the city, as both Confederate and Union forces held Fayetteville during the conflict. In 1863, Fayetteville was the site of military action as the Confederate army sought to recapture the city from Union hands. They were unsuccessful, and Fayetteville remained in Union control.
