Archives International Auctions - The Huntsville Collection 3 November 21, 2023 Archives International Auctions www.archivesinternational.com Clarkesville - Clarkesville is the seat of Johnson County, an area located near the Ozarks foothills and the Arkansas River. Originally inhabited by Native Americans, such as the Osage and the Cherokee, early settlers arrived with land grants following the War of 1812. The area was further populated by steamboat and stagecoach traffic, with railroad service established only after the Civil War. As a result of its location near the Arkansas River, the Civil War shaped Clarkesville. Soldiers from both the Union and Confederate armies passed through the city during the conflict. Confederate soldiers camped near Clarkesville in 1861, with many dying from winter conditions. A local church was used as a wartime hospital, and the Union Army later burned the building. Despite the Civil War’s impact on Clarkesville, the railroad line from Little Rock to Clarkesville helped to recover the area. An influx of German and Austrian immigrants, lured by local mining, also helped to bolster the city. Today Clarkesville is the location of the University of the Ozarks. 4 4 Clarksville,Arkansas.
