Lot of 7 Issued POW Notgeld used in Gottingen POW camp run by Army Corps X out of Hannover, Lot includes: 1 Pfennig in blue; 5 Pfennig in pink, 10 Pfennig in purple, 50 Pfennig in brown, 1 Mark in green, 2 Mark, in pink, and 5 Mark in blue. The prisoner of war camp in Göttingen in the Prussian province of Braunschweig (Brunswick), was founded by the Germans in September 1914, planning for a maximum population of ten thousand prisoners. By August 1915, the number of POW’s had swelled to twice that number, consisting of British, French, Belgian, and Russian prisoners. All of the notes are in Uncirculated condition except for the 1 Pfennig and 50 Pfennig notes which are in VF-XF. (7). Lot of 8 Issued POW Notgeld used in GroB-Poritsch POW Camp, Lot includes: 1 Pfennig, 2 Pfennig, 5 Pfennig, 10 Pfennig, 50 Pfennig, 1 Mark, 2 Mark, and 5 Mark. The Großporitsch prisoner of war camp was established during the First World War between Großporitsch and the Kleinporitsch outwork on the edge of the Zittau airfield. In the first years of the war, a settlement of barracks was built for prisoners of war, who were mainly used to build roads and paths in the area. From 1919 the prisoner of war camp served as a reception camp for German prisoners of war who had returned from abroad in the prisoner exchange. After a brief further use as a transit camp for resettlers from the parts of the provinces of Posen and Upper Silesia ceded to Poland under the Treaty of Versailles, the demolition of the camp began in 1920. Lot of 5 Issued Notgeld used in camps run by Army Corps III out of Berlin, All camps run by Army Corps III used the same notes and had camp names stamped on back, Lot includes: 1 Pfennig inn brown, 5 Pfennig in pale blue, 10 Pfennig in red, 1 Mark in blue, and 2 Mark in brown. Est. $90-180 234 234 Quedlinburg Prisoner of War Camp, 1916, Group of Issued Notgeld Germany, 1916. Lot of 8 Issued POW Notgeld used in Quedlinburg Camp run by IV Army Corps out of Magdeburg, Lot includes: 1 Pfennig in brown, 5 Pfennig in purple, 10 Pfennig in green (2), 50 Pfennig in olive green, 1 Mark in red, 5 Mark in blue, and 10 Mark in olive green. Camp Quedlinburg was a prisoner-of-war camp located 2 kilometers north of Quedlinburg, Germany, during the First World War. It was built in September 1914. From 1914 to 1922, the camp housed 12,000 to 18,000 prisoners of war on average. During the war mainly Russian, French, Belgian and English, since 1917 also Italian soldiers were interned. From the beginning they were used to build up the camp and later as workers in labour detachments, especially in agriculture. Even after the war it was used as a transit camp. It was not until 1921 that the last Russian prisoners left the camp, whereupon it was burned down. 703 prisoners of war were buried on a special part of the Quedlinburg central cemetery.
