Issued and Paid Draft for $6.04, S/N 2007, Signed by James Campbell as Postmaster General, Issued to Charles T. Gray as Postmaster of Newark, Black text with thin black border, George Washington at top center, Allegorical woman with American shield and cornucopia at top right, “Transfer” written vertically in ink at left flanked by a steamboat and locomotive, Red “Paid” handstamp at bottom center. Fine-VF condition, especially for age, and printed by Hufty & Danforth. James Campbell (September 1, 1812 - January 27, 1893) was a politician from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served as Attorney- General of Pennsylvania and United States Postmaster General during the presidency of Franklin Pierce. Campbell’s Cabinet service was a reward to the faction of the Democratic Party that supported James Buchanan in the 1852 presidential nomination convention. Furthermore, as a Catholic, Campbell’s nomination helped Pierce reach out to new voters from Ireland. Charles T. Gray (1807-1875) was appointed Postmaster of Newark, New Jersey in April, 1853. Includes notations in pencil at top left margin and on back. Fine to VF condition with a piece missing from top right and other general signs of wear. Pair of First Exchanges issued to C. Schrack & Co. One is dated August 30th, 1873 and issued for 10 Pounds and 2/11 Sterling; the other is dated October 2nd, 1875 and issued for 40 Pounds and 13/5 Sterling. Both are issued by and hand stamped with “Brown Brothers & Co.” at bottom right corners. Both are in VF condition with very few signs of aging. Brown Bros. & Co. was an investment bank from 1818 until its merger with Harriman Brothers & Company in 1931, to form Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. C. Schrack & Co. was at one time America’s oldest varnish manufacturer, established by Christian Schrack in Philadelphia in 1816. Over time, the company expanded to include paint, pigment, oil, lacquer, and other painting and varnish related products. After Schrack’s death in 1854, the company was run by his former apprentice, Joseph Stulb. During the Civil War, C.
