New York. 1896, Lot of 3 Progress proofs by Robert Ponickau. This trio of two progressive proofs and the final finished engraving first appeared on the announcement of President McKinley’s first Inaugural Ball, March 4, 1897 and was engraved by Robert Ponickau (1846-1920). Born in Germany he settled in Hudson County NJ and joined the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in 1893. He engraved stamps and bank notes and a number of eagle and ship vignettes that appeared on seals and certificates. BEP.
