March 29th, 1923. National Aeronautic Association Official Timers’ Sheets and related documents for several 500 and 1000 Kilometer speed tests taken in Wilbur Wright Field, in attempts to break World Records. Lot includes three Timers’ Sheets, with information including Lap Numbers, starting times, elapsed times, and other relevant details, recorded and signed by Orville Wright and Odis A. Porter, as well as a Notary Public; Photo of the Timers Stand at McCook Field, where a timer was to observe the speed test; Typewritten Reports on the Speed Trials, in English and French, includes the names and locations of the officials, and details from the trials, including temperature, wind velocity, and barometer readings; Department of Commerce, Bureau of Standards Certificate for Chronometer; Photograph of the Timer’s Stand at the 1 km course; Photograph of the sighting wires and Curtiss R-6 Racer; Photograph of the Pylon used in the 50 km course; and an unused postcard of the Wright Brothers Cycle Shop and Homestead in Dearborn, Michigan. Also includes a accounting of the (possible) records established in the speed tests (in French), stating that the maximum speed of a direct kilometer was set by R. L. Maughan at 380.751 KPH; the speed of 500 kilometers was set by Alex Pearson at 370.06 KPH at 1 hour and 51 minutes; and the speed of 1000 kilometers was set by H.R. Harris & R. Lockwood at 205.0669 KPH at 4 hours and 52 minutes. Very interesting and rare group related to aviation history. During this Air Derby, Orville Wright observed the record-breaking attempts, and his signature appears on all three of the Timers’ Sheets. The Wright brothers - Orville (August 19, 1871 - January 30, 1948) and Wilbur (April 16, 1867 - May 30, 1912) - were two American aviation pioneers generally credited with inventing, building, and flying the world’s first successful motor- operated airplane. The brothers were also the first to invent aircraft and controls that made fixed-wing powered flight possible. The Wright brothers’ status as inventors of the airplane has been subject to counter-claims by various parties. August Belmont Sr. (8 Dec 1813 - 24 Nov 1890) was a German-American financier, diplomat, politician and party chairman of the Democratic National Committee, and also a horse-breeder and racehorse owner. He was the founder and namesake of the Belmont Stakes, third leg of the Triple Crown series of American Thoroughbred horse racing. Black text with dark brown handwriting. Issued to James Woods, a Laborer residing at 105 Broome Street, receiving a salary of $9.00 a week. Highlights his dependents, which includes his wife Sarah, children Edward and James, and his mother-in-law Ellen Kelly. Woods procured a substitute, paying him $300 to take his place in the Civil War. Includes the signature of a Member of the Enrolling Board, certifying that James Woods’ substitute has been mustered into service on his behalf. Fine condition with some toning and staple holes at top center. May. New York, September 28th, 1863. NY State Militia, 51st Regiment, 24th Brigade and 6th Division, membership certificate as a private in the “A” Company and is entitled to the privileges as a member of the militia. The 51st Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry (or Shepard Rifles) was an infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. They were also in the Campaign from the Rapidan to the James, May 3-June 15; Battle of the Wilderness, May 5–7; Spotsylvania, May 8–12; Spotsylvania Court House, May 12–21; Assault on the Salient, May 22; On line of the Pamunkey, May 26–28; Totopotomoy, May 28–31; Cold Harbor, June 1–12. They were also in the Appomattox Campaign fromMarch 28-April 9; Assault on and fall of Petersburg, April 2, and Pursuit of Lee to Farmville April 3–9. Also included in the lot are two modern political postal cards and printed confederate flag. All mounted on black paper. VF to XF Condition.
