Black on green border and underprint, eagle at left with title at right, S/N 22, Choice Very Fine. The company designed and manufactured a submarine boat designed for use in placing torpedoes under the bottoms of war vessels. It is the design of her owners, The Submarine Monitor Company, to construct a larger vessel, to be provided with many additional improvements. Yet the little Peacemaker has obtained such success that, if the new craft does any better, it will be a subject of congratulation for those interested. The Peacemaker is thirty feet long, seven and a half feet wide, and six feet deep. Signed by M. Rosewell Schuyler as president. Scarce navigation and mining related bond. ����������������������������������������� Est. $80-160 765 765 Pennsylvania Canal Co. 1870 Issued Bond Quintet Signed by Alfred Mordecai, Jr & General Isaac Jones Wistar Pennsylvania...... 1870. 5 pieces, all the same: $1000 I/U 6% General Mortgage Bond, Black text with black border and blue underprint, Men standing beside canal with ship at top center. Adhesive internal revenue stamp at left, embossed company seal at bottom left. Fine condition with pronounced fold lines, some with a hole at center. All are signed by Alfred Mordecai, Jr (1840-1920). Mordecai was the son of Major Alfred Mordecai, from a very prominent Philadelphia Jewish family, graduating fromWest Point in June of 1861. He was active as assistant Adjutant-General during the defense of Washington in August of 1861 and participated in the Manassas Campaign and the Battle of Bull Run. General Mordecai also taught mathematics for a period at West Point, and held other positions at USMA during the Civil War. He was also the Superintendent and Commandant of the Springfield Armory in Massachusetts. Isaac J. Wistar (November 14, 1827 - September 18, 1905) was an American lawyer, miner, farmer, soldier, and author. He served in the Union Army during the American Civil War, in which he was wounded twice, and was noted for his criticized performance during the 1864 Bermuda Hundred Campaign.
