Signatures have been crossed-out, also with purple cancelled stamps. Fine condition with some glue staining at left. The Franklin Fire Insurance Company was chartered in 1829. Franklin Fire specialized in perpetual insurance, as opposed to the earlier “seven-year” polices, and thus the duration of the policy was without limit except by cancellation. Policies were paid for only once, and these deposits were based on the face value of the policy. ��������������������������������������� Est. $75-120 Virginia 582 582 Merchants & Mechanics Bank of Wheeling, 1830’s Proof Stock Certificate Wheeling, Virginia, (it became Wheeling, West Virginia in 1861), ND (1830’s). Odd Shares Proof Stock Certificate, Black text with black border, Allegorical cherub Hermes at top center. India paper mounted on cardstock. VF condition with light glue staining, Printed by Underwood, Bald & Spencer. Wheeling was established as a town in 1795 and incorporated in 1836 through a Charter granted by the Virginia Assembly. Wheeling was loyal to the Federal Government during the Civil War and the State of West Virginia was born here. The first convention of the delegates from the loyal counties of northwestern Virginia met in Wheeling on May 13, 1861, and inaugurated the movement which finally resulted in the admission of West Virginia into the Union as a state on June 20, 1863.
