Quintet of Obsolete Notes. Belleville, NJ. Lot of 5 issued notes, $1, $2, $3, $5, 1837-1839, Wait 11, 12, 13, & 14, R-5. The Manufacturers Bank at Belleville was incorporated in 1834 and closed in 1839. The two $1 (both Wait 11) have a woman with scales, seated on a bale, with a nautical scene in the background. At the left is a vignette of Liberty with a shield with plows. At the right is a sideways vignette showing a view of Belleville. The $2 note(Wait 12) has a central vignette of a woman seated with a cogwheel. At the left is a vignette of Ceres flying. At the right is a vignette of Mercury flying. The $3 note(Wait 13, Haxby NJ5 G-6) has a vignette of factories, a canal, and a bridge at the upper left. A vignette of sailing vessels appears at the left. Both Wait and Haxby list the imprint on this note as Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Co., New York. This note is imprinted Rawdon, Wright, Hatch and Edson, New York. The $5 note(Wait 14) has the NJ State Arms central vignette. At the right is a vignette of a seated native American with a gun. VG to Almost Fine with wear. Belvidere, NJ. $2, Oct. 15, 1851, Wait Unlisted, Haxby NJ15-G4, Rare. Haxby lists this bank as unincorporated in 1852, and closed in 1854. Haxby lists $1, $2, and $5 notes from this bank, but none are described. This note has pieces missing from the right top and bottom and lower left corner. ����������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� Est. $60-120 402 402 The Belvidere Bank. 1863. Pair of Obsolete Notes. Belvidere, NJ. $5, 1863, Wait 47, R-5. Two contemporary counterfeits, printed in black on one side, with a large green ‘FIVE’ protector. The Belvidere Bank was incorporated in 1831. It was converted to the Belvidere National Bank in 1865, and closed in 1931. These notes have a vignette showing a covered wagon drawn by four horses with a barn and cows in the background. There are six small portrait vignettes(3 at the left and 3 at the right) of Washington, Marshall, Lafayette, and Boudinot. The town name on these notes is spelled correctly (Belvidere) in the large print at the upper part of the title block, and incorrectly(Belvedere) in the smaller cursive print below. One of these two notes is punch cancelled and has a large violet ‘CANCELLED’ stamp at left. VG to Choice VG condition. Pair of Obsolete Notes. Bernardsville, NJ. Lot of 2 notes. 6 1/4 cents & $1, Aug. 14, 1837 and May 9, 1840, Wait Unlisted & 65, R-7 . The 6 1/4c note(Hoober 400-B) is unlisted in Wait and is unissued. About 10% of this note is missing at the left side and would have been VF with damage. The $1 note has a central vignette of Washington before crossing the Delaware. A vignette of Penn is at the left, and a vignette of Washington is at the right. Parts of both left and right ends of this note are missing and is Almost good. Lot of 5 Notes, $1, $2, & $3, 1861, Wait 67,70, & 75, R-4. Five issued notes, all printed in black on one side. The Beverly Bank opened in 1860 and closed in 1862. The two $1 notes (Wait 67) have a central vignette showing a spread eagle with factories in the background. The $2 note(Wait 70) has a central vignette of horses frightened by lightening and cattle in a stream in the background. The two $3 notes(Wait 75) have a central vignette of horses on a towpath, with a train and steamboat in the background. One of the $3 notes is punch cancelled with ‘BROKEN BANK’ and ‘SUFFOLK NATIONAL BANK’. VG to Fine Condition. ABN imprint.
