Illustrated Excerpt. Ottoman Empire. An excerpt from a copy of Tafsir al-Thalabi, also known as Al-Kashf wa-l-bay ā n ʿ an tafs ī r al-Qur ʾā n, which is a classical Sunni Qur’an commentary (tafsir) by Islamic scholar Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Thalabi. The text in this excerpt pertains to Surat An-Nisa, which literally means Women, and is the fourth chapter (s ū rah) of the Quran. The title derives from the numerous references to women throughout the chapter, including verses 34 and 127-130. Thematically, “an-Nis ā ” not only addresses concerns about women, but also discusses inheritance, marriage laws, how to deal with children and orphans, legal practices. The illustrated side of the page shows a nearly fill-size drawing featuring an Emir surrounded by (presumably religious) scholars, while observing a person receiving a form of punishment by being caned on his feet.
