Lot of 2 I/C Pennsylvania Bank Checks, Includes: September 19, 1782, $54 36/90 payable to Timothy Conner or bearer, signed John Chaloner; and, a checks dated November 9th, 1785 payable to Large and Hartshorne or bearer in the amount of 61 54/90 dollars, signed Joseph and Samuel Coates. One check is cut out cancelled and other has large ‘X’ on face, Checks range from VF to XF condition. (2). Samuel Coates (1748–1830), Philadelphia philanthropist, trained in commerce under merchant John Reynell before running his own shipping business until the 1793 yellow fever epidemic. He then devoted himself to charity, serving nearly 40 years with Pennsylvania Hospital, including as president, personally nursing victims during two epidemics and securing Benjamin West’s famous painting for the institution.
