China, ca.1913. Single envelope mailed from Shanghai, China, 1913, addressed to Captain Geo. R. Marvell, U.S.S. Helena, Kiukiang, China. Franked with a green 3-cent Chinese stamp bearing a red Republic overprint, with Shanghai postmark on front. Reverse shows multiple transit and receiving marks including a Kiukiang arrival stamp dated 1 Aug 13, a Shanghai, China postmark, and additional partial marks. The U.S.S. Helena was a gunboat serving on the Yangtze River Patrol during a period of significant political upheaval in China. Envelope only, no enclosure.
