Portrait of George Washington commissioned for the Continental Bank Note Co. in1879 by an unknown engraver who took inspiration from the Athenaeum portrait painted by Gilbert Stuart in 1796. The Stuart portrait appeared on a number of US stamps including the 10 cent stamp printed in 1855 by Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. U.S., 1891-1947. Lot of 7 items, Includes: 3 United States International Postal Money Orders issued from New York postal stations, each with handwritten entries, serial numbers, and circular postal cancellation handstamps dated 1891, 1892, and 1894. Also included are 4 U.S. Internal Revenue fermented malt liquor tax stamps, including Quarter Barrel (Series of 1933), Half Barrel (Series of 1933 and Series of 1934), and Eighth Barrel (Series of 1947), Each printed in different colors with serial numbers and punch cancellations indicating use. The money orders show typical postal handling while the tax stamps exhibit punch cancellations and light wear consistent with use. Conditions range from Fine to VF condition. (7).
