Established under the 1897 Ley General de Instituciones de Crédito, the Banco Español Refaccionario in Puebla was the sixth mortgage bank to receive authorization in Mexico. The institution was primarily established by shareholders of the Banco Oriental de México, securing its official concession on October 4, 1911, with a total capitalization of $2 million ($1 million of which was paid-in).
