State of Alaska, 1964 Series B “Earthquake” Bond Specimen Issued to Meet the Effects of the Earthquake of March 27, 1964. AK. State of Alaska, October 1, 1964. $12,485,000 3¾% General Obligation Bond, Series B (1967 Issue), Specimen, with additional materials. Large-format engraved bond issued in the immediate aftermath of the Great Alaska (Good Friday) Earthquake of March 27, 1964; of the total $12,485,000 authorization, $5,585,000 was specifically approved to address earthquake-related damage and reconstruction during Alaska’s early years of statehood. The bond bears interest at 3¾%, payable April 1 and October 1, and features black text with olive border and underprint, a prominent eagle vignette at top center, red “SPECIMEN” overprints at the signature panels, a red “Not to be Removed from Our File” overprint at right, and punch-out cancels (POCs), accompanied by three additional attached pages likely related to printing or internal reference use. Issued in response to the magnitude 9.2 earthquake—the most powerful ever recorded in North America— which caused widespread destruction across south-central Alaska, this historically important specimen represents the State’s emergency financing and long-term recovery efforts. El Paso County Industrial Association was an early civic and promotional organization formed in Colorado Springs during the territorial period to encourage agriculture, livestock breeding, and local industry through organized exhibitions and county fairs. Active by at least 1874, the association sponsored competitive fairs showcasing farm products, animals, manufactured goods, and household arts, helping promote settlement and economic development in El Paso County.
