Each is printed on india paper or thin card showing subtle variations in plate tone, impression, and paper stock as the engraving detail evolved. These train vignettes were produced by the American Bank Note Company for use on banknotes, stocks, and bonds, and became one of the firm’s most recognizable railroad motifs. XF to CU condition. An attractive assemblage of steel-engraved vignette proofs featuring steamships and sailing vessels, produced primarily by the American Bank Note Company and Continental Bank Note Company of New York. Subjects include early sidewheel steamers, harbor and docking scenes, and ocean-going packet ships, several titled including Huma Passage and Erie Railway, Penna. R.R.. Nearly all are printed on thin india paper, mostly unmounted, with fine detail and strong impressions showcasing the artistry of mid-19th century security engraving. These vignettes were employed on banknotes, stocks, and bonds to evoke commerce, trade, and transportation themes. Condition is excellent for the type, most Choice VF to Uncirculated.
