The Yellowstone Park Association was established in 1886. Charles Gibson, Nelson Thrall, and John Bullitt formed this new company with financial backing from the Northern Pacific RR. Delaware, 1921. 4 Shares, I/U Capital Stock Certificate, Black with green border and underprint, Vignette above title shows man on the left pointing to a globe with the continent of Africa prominent with text reading ‘Africa the Land of Opportunity’ and an ocean liner with two smoke stacks to right, Signed by George Tobias as Secretary and Orland M. Thompson as President. Certificate is in Fine to VF+ condition with staple holes and splits at fold lines. The Black Star Line, Inc. was founded in 1919 by Marcus Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association as a bold effort to establish Black-owned shipping and trade. Organized in 1871 under William H. Gleason, the company aimed to obtain Internal Improvement Fund swamp-land grants, cut inland canals, and reclaim lands to spur settlement; the program became entangled in litigation, with contracts rescinded in 1873 and later court decisions effectively ending the venture—making these bonds a tangible relic of Florida’s Reconstruction-era internal-improvement ambitions; attractive display piece of Florida fiscal history.
