Color Sample Book, 1912-14Used for Colors Selection of theWashington-Franklin Postage Stamp Colors. Washington, D.C., B.E.P. Color Sample Book featuring all of the colors used on the 1912-14 Washington- Franklin Issues, from 1 Cent to $1.00, and also the 1914 Special Delivery (Dark Blue), and Postage Due (Dark Salmon red) stamps. The cover is leather bound with gold lettering “Specimen Book Postage Stamp Inks - Bureau of Engraving and Printing - 1914”, the dimensions of each page is 6.25 x 2.75 inches, uniface, intaglio printed, with a portrait of Jackson in middle surrounded by an ornate frame and a lighter undertint in the same color, each page on the left has 3 different color bars showing the same color at different color densities with the denomination, and description of the related stamp (Ordinary, Special Delivery, or Postage Due, typed onto the margin). This color sample booklet was printed and designed in 1914 for use in the color selection of the updated Washington Franklin Issue stamp colors. During this time period, the Bureau was printing large sized banknotes (7.5 by 3.125 inches), up until 1928-29 when it switched to small size notes (6.25 by 2.6 inches). What is intriguing about this B.E.P. booklet is that not only the colors, which are attributed to the Washington-Frankin stamp issue of 1912-1914, but the size of this color sample page which is also an ornate banknote Look-a-like, with each page having the dimensions nearly identical to the 1928-29 small size banknote issues that the B.E.P. converted to in the manufacture of small size notes, but this was 14 to 15 years before the size was permanently changed. This is the first time we have seen this color sample book and also this is the first Bureau of Engraving and Printing color sample booklet we have seen or offered as well as being an important part of the U.S. postage stamp history for the Washington-Franklin definitive issues.
