497 Salomon Brothers & Hutzler Specimen Bond.New York, 1969,
$-odd, 8% 15 Year Subordinated Debenture Due October 1, 1983
Specimen bond. Blue border and underprint, Classical bust of man
on top, No coupons, Specimen overprint, POC’s, XF condition. In
1910, With $5,000 in savings and a small family loan, Arthur, Herbert
and Percy Salomon left their father’s firm and started their own busi-
ness, Salomon Brothers, at 80 Broadway in NewYork City. Salomon
joined forces with Morton Hutzler, an established firm with a seat
on the New York Stock Exchange and Salomon Brothers & Hutzler
was then formed. They registered with the Treasury Department in
1917-1918 seeing the opportunity that The Liberty Loan Act of 1917
offered and became one of the first primary dealers in U.S. gov-
ernment securities in the U.S. A scandal in 1991 involving a Salo-
mon trader Paul Mozer, who had been submitting false bids in an
attempt to purchase more Treasury bonds than permitted by one
buyer during the period between December 1990 and May 1991 led
to Salomon being fined $290 million for this infraction, the largest
fine ever levied on an investment bank at the time. One of 3 Salomon
