2nd January, 1833, 2 Shares, I/U, Plain form with decorative counterfoil

on left, S/N 2, Has printed “Increased Stock” on top margin, Issued to

William B. Astor, signed on the back, but signature not readable and

possibly not his. Extremely early and rare New Jersey railroad stock.

William Backhouse Astor (1792 – 1875) was an American property

tycoon who inherited most of his father John Jacob Astor’s fortune.

He worked as a partner in his father’s successful export business. His

massive investment in Manhattan real estate enabled major donations

to the Astor Library in East Village, which became the New York Public

Texas, 2 Shares, I/U, Black without underprint, No vignette, S/N 3, Fine

with toning on the top 1/3rd of the certificate and the upper left corner

is missing, still as very rare certificate. This is the certificate pictured in

Cox and is very possibly unique. (From a Texas Gentleman’s Collection).

example known and is the Cox Plate Note. We sold this stock over 7
