English and the reverse is printed in Chinese. English side is printed in

black print with an ornate blue border with a red under print. And the

Chinese side is printed in black with an ornate brown border and pink

under print. Both sides have a purple stamp with writing in Chinese. No

vignette on either side, just company title. XF condition, with scalloped

and Uncancelled 5% Coupon Bond. Black print with an ornate brown

border and yellow under print. Certificate is written in English and

French. Company name at top center of certificate. Fine condition

with 29 stamps missing from the back. China was compelled by the

1901 Boxer Protocol to submit to numerous demands by the European

and American powers including the payment of a huge indemnity

for the losses they had suffered as a result of the Rebellion. This Gold

Bond was part of the Chinese Republic’s effort to raise funds to pay

the indemnity, a dramatic piece of Chinese history. (John E.Herzog
