Sight Draft. $25. Vignette of small train on upper left and small dog

with safe on bottom. Printed in brown. Signed by Daniel Butterfield

as Superintendent. Correspondent bank is The Bank of Ilion, NY. XF

condition. Scarce and early American Express Fiscal item. Daniel Ad-

ams Butterfield was a NewYork businessman, a Union general in the

American Civil War, and Assistant U.S. Treasurer in NewYork. He is

credited with composing the bugle call Taps and was involved in the

Black Friday gold scandal in the Grant administration. The American

Express Company had been founded by his father, John Butterfield.
