1201 Cyrus Durand Archive Book Unique Vignette Plate #14
From the “52” Collection.
ND (ca.1820<40’s), 10x10 inch unique
artistic vignette sheet with black engraved portrait of young woman
with bonnet in center inside cycloidal lathe engraved shield sur<
rounded by a circle all in red, A simple and elegant design that
should be appreciated for it’s artistic merit as well as the knowledge
that it was created by the hand of one of the fathers of security
printing in this country. This page was Page 14 of 96 different pages
saved in Durand’s personal engraving book. All are cut down proofs
on india mounted to card by Durand. Durand was responsible for
the direction that security printing and engraving took in the United
States and was the holder of many patents that allowed the
engraver to practice his art at a new level that made it more difficult
to counterfeit banknotes. (ex The 52 Collection, Part 1, 06<29<10).

Lot of 4 Proof vignettes of maps with railroad routes on them of
numerous railroads, all are printed on india and mounted on manila
cards, all in XF to Au, a few with light glue stains. ABNC,

1206 Unique Progress Proof Engravings of Well Known
Allegorical Vignettes.
Lot of 13 different progress engraving
proofs from 4 different Vignettes. Includes 4 different states of
“Progress” vignette of man turning wheels of progress with addi<
tional allegorical figures; 3 progress engravings of “Science and
Commerce No.2” of 3 Allegorical Women, one holding torch, the
second a plaque and the third a winged railroad wheel, all in differ<
ent states of engraving, with the last and complete engraving with
American Bank Note Companies Logo ABNCo.; 3 different engrav<
ing states of seated allegorical woman holding bee hive and flowers.
All with some degree of foxing spots, still very attractive and rarely
seen archival production material. From a new find.
