Issue.
Pretoria, South Africa, 29 January 1872, 6 Pence, parchment
money, P-43, Issued banknote with unlisted date, Black on parch-
ment type of paper, 72mm by 48 mm, hand-signed at left, serial
#1709, hand-signed “Williams”? at left, engraved signature of
Pretorius, President of the State. Pick lists this Shilling with the date
13.4.1872 and illustrates a sixpence of this rare and interesting cur-
rency. Choice Good to VG but really VG+ for issue which is difficult
to find in legible condition, Extremely rare. (Purchased from South
Africa’s leading collector, the late Jimmie Lawrence, in September
of 1990.) ....................................................................

Proof Banknote.
South Africa, 18xx (1870’s), 10 Pounds, P-S581 or
possibly an 1890’s Issue Unlisted 10 Pounds denomination, P-S583?,
note has a Waterlow imprint as well as a light tan underprint that is
missing from the earlier issue, Unlisted Front and Back proofs,
Standing Britannia at left with flag, shield and sheep, Black on very
light brown filigree-cameo pattern underprint, the listed note does
not have the underprint, the back uniface proof is printed in bur-
gundy instead of listed red, Uncirculated to CU condition, Very small
Waterlow & Sons, Ltd. imprint on bottom middle border area. Very
rare if not unique proof that differs significantly from the listed vari-
ety in SCWPM. W&S. .................................................
