and looking a t world globe with jug in background,, 6 x 9 inches,
printed india on large card, one of the proofs has noted in pencil at
bottom, GFC Smillie - After finishing by S Delmore? November 1877,
both with foxing and toning, Rare proof variations. . .

es, Includes a progress proof of Gear’s portrait that is mostly
engraved except for the eyes and a final version with complete
engraving and touched up eyes and a BEP imprint. India on large
card, Both have blue control or plate numbers on back, The top mar-
gins of both have been handled roughly but mostly VF to XF, Rare
BEP progress proof vignettes, Possibly engraved by G.F.C.Smillie.

2586 M.W.Baldwin Engraved Proof of Distinguished Gentleman.
Washington, D.C., 1915, Engraved portrait of distinguished gentle-
man, 6 x 8 inches, Blue BEP control or plate number on back, possi-
bly hand signed by Baldwin on lower right, printed india on large
card, XF condition, In 1869 Baldwin worked with National BNC and
remained after consolidation with ABNC in 1878. Baldwin joined the
Bureau of Engraving and Printing in 1897 and retired in 1920.
At the BEP, Baldwin executed every type of engraving including the
backs for the $20 and $50 Federal Reserve notes of 1914 in only 20
working days. Postage stamp engravings out-numbered his
bank note engravings. He also engraved MPC’s and Foreign Bank
