Die proofs and one mounted photograph, All of Franklin facing
right, includes smaller versions of two different stage progress
proofs, Plate #’s 362504 & 673768 with Geo. S. Nixon and
Richardson listed on bottom with dat March 27, 1909; also included
are two large versions, one engraved with pencil touchups on face
and back ground with large nose and one with smaller nose and an
earlier progress engraving, Both have written on back “Progress FR
137”, Also included is a mounted photograph of the
finished vignette and a copy of the article written about this lot in
the 1992 Essay-Proof Journal Vol. 49, No. 3. Rare BEP Progress
proofs from FRN’s. (ex- Stacks “The 52 Collection” June 2010, Lot

tographs mounted on thin cardboard, back to back. ND (ca. 1880’s),
13 x 10.5 inches, one image showing Smillie reading while sitting
with his wife who is knitting, the second image is a portrait of Smillie
sitting at his desk studying a drawing. The photographs are in VF to
XF condition but the mounting card has toning and foxing at edges
and is separating on the edge. Rare photographs of this legendary
artist and Landscape engraver and father of James D. Smillie and

uncirculated but the border card has some small bends, Rare Smillie

2576 G.F.C. Smillie’s 1st Stage 1908 Partially Engraved Die Pull of
Theodore Roosevelt.
Washington, D.C., July 9th, 1908, Lot of 2
items. Includes a Bureau of Engraving and Printing 7 x 10 inch
intaglio engraved portrait of Theodore Roosevelt printed on thin
card on off white toned paper, The highlight of this lot is a partially
engraved portait autographed by Smillie in pencil and in his hand
written “1st Stage - 9 July 1908. The card back bares the BEP blue
control number “298284”, printed in black on india on large thin
card, Amazing signed partial early stage portrait of this famous
image. Unique and historic to say the least. BEP. G.F.C. Smillie, was
the premiere engraver for the Bureau of Engraving & Printing at the
beginning of the Twentieth Century. He also produced security
engraving work for the American Bank Note Company, the National
Bank Note Company, and the Homer Lee Bank Note Company. His
father was the famous engraver James Smillie. . . . . . .

The middle engraved state has Smillie signature and “Unfinished”
written in pencil, Each card back has blue BEP control or plate num-
bers and one has date July 17, 1916 stamped on back, some light
