Connecticut Comptroller’s Office, 1789, I/C Payment Certificate Connecticut, 1789. 9 Pounds I/C Payment Certificate made out to Doctor Hezchiah Merrill and Signed by Oliver Wolcott as Comptroller and Jedidiah Huntington Esq. as Treasurer. Olive Wolcott ( January 11, 1760 - June 1, 1833) was the second United States Secretary of the Treasury, a judge of the United States Circuit Court for the Second Circuit, and the 24th Governor of Connecticut. He was a member of the Pay-Table Committee for several years, and was a commissioner to settle claims of Connecticut against the United States from 1784 to 1788. In 1796, he was George and Martha Washington’s intermediary in getting the Collector of Customs for Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Joseph Whipple, to capture and send an escaped slave, Oney (sometimes Ona) Judge, back to Mount Vernon. He was ultimately unsuccessful. When Wolcott died in 1833 in New York City, he was the last surviving cabinet member of the Washington administration. Jedediah (or Jedidiah) Huntington (4 August 1743 - 25 September 1818) was an American general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. After the war, he served in numerous civilian posts. Interesting piece of military history from the Revolutionary War. Lot of 3 I/C Payment Certificates for 5 Shillings, Money should be paid out of “any funds appropriated for the payment of interest on the liquidated debt of the State of Connecticut”, First is made out to Thomas Pikkin Esq., S/N 3077, Second is made out to Ezeckiel Williams Jr., S/N 3091, Third is made out to Daniel Jones, S/N 3521. All are Cut Cancelled at center and signed by Ralph Pomeroy (1750-1816). Pomeroy was a colonel in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, participating in key battles like Bunker Hill. After the war, he served as the Comptroller of Connecticut from 1790 to 1792. Pieces range from VF to XF condition. (3). Lot of 3 I/C Payment Certificates for 10 Shillings, Money should be paid out of “any funds appropriated for the payment of interest on the liquidated debt of the State of Connecticut”, First is made out to John Robbin Esq., S/N 3991, Second is made out to Nehemiah Galis, S/N 4811, Third is made out to Isaac Tomlinson, S/N 5141. All are Cut Cancelled at center and signed by Ralph Pomeroy (1750-1816). Pomeroy was a colonel in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, participating in key battles like Bunker Hill. After the war, he served as the Comptroller of Connecticut from 1790 to 1792. Pieces range from Choice VF to AU condition. (3). Lot of 2, I/C payments of “Lawful Money out of any Funds appropriated for the Payment of interest on the liquidated Debt of the State of Connecticut.” Both were issued for 1 Pound with Black text and simple black scroll work border, cut cancelled at center, and signed by Ralph Pomeroy as Comptroller, S/ Ns 8885 and 8990, Both are in Fine to VF+ condition. Ralph Pomeroy was a notable figure in the late 18th century, serving as the Comptroller of Connecticut in 1790. His career began with significant military service during the American Revolutionary War, where he held positions such as first lieutenant and Deputy Quartermaster General for Connecticut. Following the war, Pomeroy engaged in mercantile and manufacturing activities in Hartford. Despite his attempts to secure federal appointments, including requests to George Washington, he remained active in state roles, notably managing Connecticut’s finances as Comptroller, where he oversaw state debt payments and other fiscal responsibilities.
