Cherokee Outlet, Oklahoma Territory, 1894 (Due March 4th, 1897), $1000 Specimen 4% Indebtedness of the United States of America, Certificate of Ownership, The Union Trust Company of New York was the trustee that administered this U.S. Federal bond, Vignette of Cherokee Indian on top title and bank building on left. Green border. Red specimen overprint, POC’s and “00000” serial numbers. XF condition. Location of the “Cherokee Outlet” was a strip of land in Oklahoma territory. Specimen “Certificate of Ownership in 4% Indebtedness of United States of America, Due 1899”. Back has legend “It is hereby certified that the United States of America have agreed to pay the “Cherokee Nation” the sum of Eight Million, Three Hundred Thousand Dollars ($8,300,00)in five equal annual installments, beginning.....at a rate of four per centum per annum, in consideration of the purchase by the U.S. of A. from the Cherokee Nation of certain lands known as the “Cherokee Outlet.” The front of the bond has additional text “This indebtedness was incurred by the United States of America for the purchase from the Cherokee Nation of certain lands known as the Cherokee Outlet under an ACT OF CONGRESS APPROVED MARCH 3rd, 1893 and has been purchased from the Cherokee Nation and assigned as per copy of certificate of the Secretary of the Department of the Interior endorsed hereon to the UNION TRUST COMPANY OF NEW YORK, which holds it as trustee. Evidently, the Cherokee Nation did not want to wait for the annual settlement and took a discounted lump sum from R.T.Wilson & Company as factors. The amount of discount is not listed. Decker, Jewett & Co. was a key bank in Marysville, California, founded in 1855 during the Gold Rush. Established by A.J. Decker and Edward Jewett, the bank provided essential financial services, including deposits, loans, and handling gold dust, supporting the region’s booming economy. Known for its stability and trustworthiness, it became a central institution in Marysville’s financial and civic life. The bank played a significant role in the town’s growth during this transformative era in California. Lot of 4 Documents Pertaining to George Thompson and his service during the Civil War, Includes: 1866 Form No. 5 for a George Thompson from Stafford Connecticut in 1866 for information on bounty for White or Colored Troops from 1 to 3 year enlistments with Thompson’s signature; Included is Additional Discharge for Additional Bounty with reason of discharge was “Termination of War”; and letter from Ezra B French, who was appointed Second Auditor of the Treasury August 3, 1861, by President AbrahamLincoln, and continued during the administrations of Presidents Andrew Johnson, Ulysses S. Elaborately illustrated color lithograph with a decorated portrait of George Washington at top center, below the portrait in 28 small vignettes is the panorama of Washington, includes a view of the Capitol building with Thomas Crawford’s sculpture “Freedom” atop the dome and 3 color vignettes at the foot that include Lady Liberty; a drawing of the Washington Monument and a scene of George Washington crossing the Delaware River. Charles Magnus & Co. first published this patriotic work at the outset of the U.S. Civil War to celebrate the history of the founding of the United States by George Washington and the flourishing of the nation’s capital. Archivally reinforced. Lot includes original envelope that Panorama came in. Also includes correspondence and envelope Dated February 1st, 1862 with a letter head of the “Review of the Grand Army of the Potomac by President Lincoln and Genera; McClellan.
