A letter-receipt referring to “return of provisions and clothing collected in the town of Prinston on the Tax of 2/6 on the Pound is lodged in the office amounting to 1160 pounds 12 shillings and 3 Pence half penny Lawful Money at the prices stated in Said Tax - for delivery of which Articles the Select Men of Said Town are accountable to the state”, certified by Olive Wolcott Jr., Fenn Wadsworth, Huntington, and John Lawrence. VF to XF condition. Signed by Pay-Table members Jedediah Huntington, Fenn Wadsworth, and John Lawrence. Promissory Notes like this were issued by the State of Connecticut to help finance the Revolutionary War. The Pay-Table (also known as the Committee of Four) managed Connecticut’s military finances during the ongoing conflict. John Lawrence (1719-1802) served as treasurer of the Connecticut colony, and later as the Connecticut State Treasurer from 1769 to 1789, spanning the crucial period of colonial rule, through the American revolution, and into the early years of the United States. During the Revolutionary War, Lawrence was commissioner of loans for the new nation. VF condition. Lot of 2 I/C Treasury Receipts, one for £86.19/-. 8d and the other £26.13/- 4d. Both were to be paid with 6% interest in Gold or Silver, Signed by John Lawrence as Treasurer of the State of Connecticut, Black text with black border, Endorsements on back, One is cut cancelled and one is hole cancelled. Lot of 3, all are I/C payments of “Lawful Money, out of any Funds appropriated for the Payment of interest on the liquidated Debt of the State of Connecticut.” All were issued for 10 Shillings, Black text with simple black scroll work border, cut cancelled at center, and signed by Ralph Pomeroy as Comptroller. The notes were issued to Noah Porter, John Hoyt jr., and Phinchas Lewis, All are in Fine to VF+ condition. Ralph Pomeroy was a notable figure in the late 18th century, serving as the Comptroller of Connecticut in 1790. His career began with significant military service during the American Revolutionary War, where he held positions such as first lieutenant and Deputy Quartermaster General for Connecticut. Following the war, Pomeroy engaged in mercantile and manufacturing activities in Hartford. Despite his attempts to secure federal appointments, including requests to George Washington, he remained active in state roles, notably managing Connecticut’s finances as Comptroller, where he oversaw state debt payments and other fiscal responsibilities_.
