Reconstruction efforts focused on rebuilding its infrastructure, but the railroad struggled with funding and eventually went through multiple reorganizations and ownership changes. It was eventually absorbed by larger rail systems. The Central Pacific Railroad, incorporated in 1861 and chartered in 1862 by the “Big Four” businessmen, it was to build the Western portion beginning in Sacramento, California, of the First Transcontinental Railroad, completing it in 1869. The Central Pacific laid rails from California to Utah and met up with the Union Pacific in 1869 forming the first transcontinental railroad. ABNC. The railroad was crucial in connecting the U.S. coast- to-coast, driving westward expansion and economic growth. It relied heavily on Chinese laborers, who worked under harsh conditions. By the 1880s, it merged into the Southern Pacific Railroad but retained its identity until 1959.
