The letterhead states that the show was re-organized for the traveling season of 1875, and that it was patronized by Her Majesty and Royal Family, at the Alhambra Palace in London, England on May 14th, 1858. The monarch at the time was Queen Victoria. The included correspondence is regarding a J. Reid being unable to attend to the case of O’Brien’s in the June term, and where to reach him in the meantime. Interestingly, Alhambra Palace was an elaborate music hall with a circus ring installed in 1858, presumably where the Howes and Cushing’s show would have taken place. Among the biggest billings for Howes and Cushing’s Great United States Circus were two “educated mules” named Pete and Barney who would enact comedy routines where they tossed people off of their backs. Alhambra Palace was destroyed by a fire and later demolished. It was located on the modern location of ODEON Luxe Leicester Square. Est. $25-80 Various Locations 365 365 Mystery Ephemera Lot from 1901 - Checks, Bill Heads, Letter Heads & Miscellaneous Items - Unsearched in Original Wrapping.
