Frank Finley Merriam (December 22, 1865 – April 25, 1955) was an American Republican politician who served as the 28th governor of California from June 2, 1934, until January 2, 1939. Assuming the governorship at the height of the Great Depression following the death of Governor James Rolph, Merriam defeated the Democratic candidate Upton Sinclair in the California gubernatorial election in 1934. Merriam also served as the State Auditor of Iowa from 1900 to 1903, and served in both the Iowa and California state legislatures. ������������������������������������������������������������������������������������ Est. $250-500 EPHEMERA - HISTORIC AUTOGRAPHS Massachusetts 489 489 Proprietors of the Woman’s Journal 1870 Issued Pair of Stock Certificates from the Samuel May family Boston, Massachusetts, 1870. Lot of 2 stock certificates for the Proprietors of the Woman’s Journal, one issued to Samuel May and the other issued to his wife, Mary May. The Woman’s Journal was the first regular woman’s rights periodical in America, and was founded by notable suffragist, abolitionist, and feminist Lucy Stone in 1870, the same year these stocks were issued. Her husband, Henry Brown Blackwell, signed both pieces. Samuel May was a prominent Massachusetts figure, known as “Deacon May,” and was the sixth generation of his family in the state. His wife, Mary Goddard May was also a devoted advocate of the abolition movement, among other public service endeavors. This unique and rare lot has a fascinating history behind it. �����������������������������������������������������������������������Est. $2000-3000 EPHEMERA - HISTORIC DOCUMENTS - CIVIL WAR New York 490 490 Civil War Naval Discharge Papers and Notarized Oath of Identity, 1864 For Claiming Prize Money fromCaptured Confederate Ships During the CivilWar. New York, 1864. Discharge paperwork and Oath of Identity of Daniel J. Strong who enlisted in the Union Navy in February of 1863, and served on board the USS Colorado. The Colorado sailed from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on 9 December, to rejoin the blockading force off Mobile, Alabama, on 13 March 1863. She shared in the capture of the schooner Hunter on 17 May. Returning to Portsmouth Navy Yard, on 4 February 1864, she was again placed out of commission from 18 February-1 September. VF-XF condition. The documents relate to Daniel Strong’s attempt to claim a portion of the prize money, but he has no evidence to prove his claim.
