Souvenir Silk Handkerchief intaglio printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, commemorating the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, 26 cm x 27 cm, featuring a portrait of Theodore Roosevelt at top center flanked by American flags, Ornate embroidery throughout and on edges. VF condition with some stains, still in good condition for its age. The Louisiana Purchase Exposition, informally known as the St. Louis World’s Fair, was an international exposition held in St. Louis, Missouri, United States, from April 30 to December 1, 1904. Local, state, and federal funds totaling $15 million were used to finance the event. More than 60 countries and 43 of the then-45 American states maintained exhibition spaces at the fair, which was attended by nearly 19.7 million people. Document signed by citizens of Virginia putting forth their own funds to build a memorial “in the form of a carillon, to the patriotism and valor of the soldiers, sailors, marines, and women from Virginia who served in the world war.” The World War I Memorial Carillon, built by Cram & Ferguson in 1932, is a memorial to the roughly 3,700 Virginians who died in that war; it contains 56 bells and is 240 feet tall. Jabez Abel Bostwick (September 23, 1830 - August 16, 1892) was an early oil pioneer and magnate, and when John D. Rockefeller formed the Standard Oil Company, Mr. Bostwick aided in its organization and became its first Treasurer. John Davison Rockefeller ( July 8, 1839 - May 23, 1937) was the guiding force behind the creation and development of the Standard Oil Company, which grew to dominate the oil industry and became one of the first big trusts in the United States. He is widely considered the wealthiest American of all time and the richest person in modern history. Standard Oil was an American oil-producing, transporting, refining, and marketing company. Its history as one of the world’s first and largest multinational corporations ended in 1911, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled, in a landmark case, that Standard Oil was an illegal monopoly.
