Issued First Bill of Exchange for the sum of 56 Pounds - 7 Shillings - 6d,, owed to Edward Mitchell, Esq. Black text with brown ink , S/N 19. Signatures, including Thomas Russell Jr.’s, have been crossed-out, while William Russell, one of the founders of the company, is listed at bottom left with the other Proprietors of the Principio Co.. The payment is listed as being in full for 2 year’s Quit Rents for Vacant Land in Cecil County. Maryland. 17th February, 1774. Issued receipt for the “Accounts of Iron Delivered…From the 24th of June to the 25th of December following (1773). The bill is addressed to and signed by Samuel Clark. Printed on watermarked paper with seated Britania. VF condition with minor edge faults and rounded corners. The Principio Company formed as a joint stock company in 1720 to take advantage of new laws passed in Maryland to encourage the early iron industry. A leading iron producer during the Colonial period, Principio held Maryland’s first blast furnace, operating 1725, and first refinery forge, constructed 1728. By 1729, one of the partners was Augustine Washington, father of George Washington. In 1735, the Principio Company established a refining forge at North East to expand processing capacity which this receipt refers to. After the American Revolution, Principio made cannons and other ordnance until the British destroyed the complex in a raid during the War of 1812.
