The debenture is a property in Jamaica belonging to a John Hinchcliffe. Also included is a small 4.5 x 1.75 piece with a written closing to a letter or document, followed by Coutts signature. All 3 pieces are in Very Fine condition, especially considering their age. Thomas Coutts (7 September 1735 - 24 February 1822) was a British banker who was the founder of the banking house of Coutts & Co, which is in business to this day. A 19th century merchant ship, the Thomas Coutts, bore his name. (3) ( John E. Lot of 11 Letters from Robert Taft to Lewis Strauss, letters are printed on Taft, Stettinius & Hollister and Robert A. Taft letterhead. Robert Alphonso Taft Sr. (September 8, 1889 – July 31, 1953) was an American politician, lawyer, and scion of the Republican Party’s Taft family. Taft represented Ohio in the United States Senate, briefly served as Senate Majority Leader, and was a leader of the conservative coalition of Republicans and conservative Democrats who blocked expansion of the New Deal. Often referred to as “Mr. Republican”, he co-sponsored the Taft–Hartley Act of 1947, which banned closed shops, created the concept of right-to-work states, and regulated other labor practices. Lewis Lichtenstein Strauss was an American government official, businessman, philanthropist, and naval officer. He was one of the original members of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) in 1946, and he served as the commission’s chairman in the 1950s. Strauss was a major figure in the development of nuclear weapons after World War II, nuclear energy policy, and nuclear power in the United States. The letters, mostly refer to various stock transactions, either buying or selling of a few different companies. Lot of 2 pieces, Includes: Colorful teal and gold invitation on coated cardstock regarding a “Testimonial by the Citizens of Philadelphia to Louis Kossuth, Gov. of Hungary, December 1851” with the quote “There is nothing difficult to him who wills,” Features an eagle at top center with allegorical patriotic women at left and right, VF condition with some staining and adhesive damage on back; Also includes a corresponding embossed envelope with gold text reading “Complimentary Banquet to Governor Kossuth by the Citizens of Philadelphia, at the Musical Fund Hall, December 26th, 1851, VF condition with toning and stains on back. Louis Kossuth (19 September 1802 - 20 March 1894) was a Hungarian nobleman, lawyer, journalist, politician, statesman and governor-president of the Kingdom of Hungary during the revolution of 1848-49. He was widely honored during his lifetime, including in Great Britain and the United States, as a freedom fighter and bellwether of democracy in Europe. Connecticut and Brooklyn, NY. Henry George Jr. was an American newspaperman who served two terms as a United States representative from New York from 1911 to 1915. He was the son of the American political economist Henry George (1839–1897). The 1846 letter is a stampless cover with a red circular Norwich Town, Ct., Postmark and “5” and “Paid” hand stamps.
