Named for President Thomas Jefferson, early frontiersmen explored the area of Jefferson City in the late 1600s. Pioneer Daniel Boone’s son, Daniel Morgan Boone laid out the city, and it grew over the decades as a midway point between St. Louis and Kansas City. The Civil War divided the city. Many residents supported the secession movement, and Union troops occupied Jefferson City under martial law until 1865. Order was eventually restored with the Missouri Constitution of 1875. Local industries expanded, and Jefferson City began to experience steady growth into the 20th century.
