Archives International Auctions - The Huntsville Collection 14 November 21, 2023 Archives International Auctions www.archivesinternational.com Yellville - Yellville is the seat of Marion County, located near the Ozark Mountains along Crooked Creek. Named for Archibald Yell, Arkansas’ first representative in Congress, Yellville originated as a settlement called Shawneetown. The city of Yellville was incorporated in 1855, shortly after a political and family feud between the Tutts and Everetts escalated, culminating in the arrival of state militia to arrest the belligerents and restore some order. Located in the north of Marion County, many of Yellville’s citizens were displeased at Arkansas’ secession from the Union. A Confederate Camp, Camp Adams, was located nearby, although Yellville remained in Union hands. The city was almost entirely destroyed during the War due to the hostilities between the two sides. Because of this, Yellville was slow to emerge from the wreckage of the Civil War. 23 23 Yellville, Arkansas. Coleman & Shaver, 1862, 50 Cents, Obsolete Scrip Note Yellville, Marion County, Arkansas.
