The area was settled in the 1830s and was an established town by the 1850s. Like a few other cities in Arkansas, Berryville was inhabited by Confederate and Union forces at different points during the Civil War. Guerillas targeted Berryville throughout the period, and by the war’s end, much of the town was burned. October 16, 1862. $2, Unlisted in Rothert and Criswell, Issued obsolete scrip note, Dated October 16th, 1862, “Payable in Confederate Notes, or Mo. Defense Bonds, when $10, $20, or $50 is presented”, Black text, signature at bottom in gray ink, S/N 20, VF to Choice VF condition or better. Issuer’s name is difficult to make out but appears to be ( Julett?) & Wormington. A similar design but lower denomination, 50 Cent, example in lessor condition was auctioned in 2010 by Heritage for $920. Karnes” in pencil on back, Face has text “In Confederate Notes, Arkansas War Bonds, or Treasury Warrants”, S/N 961, VF to Choice VF condition with uneven margins and a 3 mm tear on the top left border that is difficult to see, Foster, Printer, Fort Smith.
