VF condition with Washington, D.C. handstamp at top left margin. Francis Elias Spinner ( January 21, 1802 to December 31, 1890) was a U. S. Representative from New York from 1855 to 1861. Two weeks after Spinner left Congress, President Abraham Lincoln appointed him Treasurer of the United States. He served through the Johnson andGrant administrations fromMarch 16, 1861, until his resignation on July 1, 1875. During the Civil War, he hired women as clerks because they weren’t subject to military service. He paid themwell and defended their employment against critics. He was the first government administrator to hire women, and he continued to do so after the Civil War. ������������������������������ Est. $90-180 Washington, D.C. 361 361 Francis E. Spinner, 1868 Handwritten Letter to a Judge about a Pension Claim for a Widowed Mother of a Civil War Soldier. Washington, D.C., November 18, 1868. Handwritten letter in Spinner’s hand from Francis E. Spinner regarding a young man who evidently was killed in the Civil War, Black text with bold Spinner signature at bottom. Discusses a previous letter sent to Spinner, which he had copied and “enclosed one each to General Schofield, the Secretary of War, and to General Butterfield, to who I understand the matter will be referred.” Spinner then states that he wrote a “strong letter” to both men, on “behalf of the widowed mother of young Perry.” Ezra Graves name also appears at bottom left. John McAllister Schofield (September 29, 1831 - March 4, 1906) was an American soldier who held major commands during the American Civil War. He was appointed U.S. Secretary of War (1868-1869) under President Andrew Johnson and later served as Commanding General of the United States Army (1888-1895). Daniel Adams Butterfield (October 31, 1831 - July 17, 1901) was a New York businessman, a Union General in the American Civil War, and Assistant U.S. Treasurer. Francis Elias Spinner ( January 21, 1802 – December 31, 1890) was an American politician from New York. He served as Treasurer of the United States from 1861 to 1875, and was the first administrator in the federal government to employ women for clerical jobs. Fine-VF condition with faint staining. Wagner, United States Senator, Trio of Autographs, 1938-41. Washington D.C......, 1938-41. Three letters signed by Robert F. Wagner on United States Senate Letterhead. Robert Ferdinand Wagner I ( June 8, 1877 – May 4, 1953) was an American politician. He was a Democratic U.S. Senator from New York from 1927 to 1949. Born in Prussia, Wagner migrated with his family to the United States in 1885. After graduating from New York Law School, Wagner won election to the New York State Legislature, eventually becoming the Democratic leader of the state senate. Working closely with fellow New York City Democrat Al Smith, Wagner and Smith embraced reform, especially to the benefit of their core constituency, the working class. They built a coalition for these reforms that embraced unions, social workers, some businessmen, and numerous middle-class activists and civic reform organizations across the state. Wagner left the state senate in 1918, and served as a justice of the New York Supreme Court until his election to the US Senate in 1926. As Senator, Wagner was a leader of the New Deal Coalition putting special emphasis on supporting the labor movement. He was a close associate and strong supporter of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He sponsored three major laws: the National Labor Relations Act of 1935, the Social Security Act of 1935, and the Housing Act of 1937. Wagner resigned from the Senate in 1949 due to ill health, and died in 1953. His son Robert F.
