Alaska, 1964. $12,485,000 Specimen 3.75% General Obligation Bond with additional materials, possibly related to printing, Black text with olive border and underprint, Eagle at top center. This bond issued for $12,485,000 had $5,585,000 authorized to meet the effects of the earthquake. The bond has “Not to be Removed from Our File” red overprint at right, red specimen overprints at bottom, and POCs, with three additional pages. VF condition, SCBN. The Alaska earthquake tragedy of March 27, 1964, also known as the Great Alaskan earthquake and Good Friday earthquake, occurred at 5:36 PM AKST on Good Friday, March 27. Across south-central Alaska, ground fissures, collapsing structures, and tsunamis resulting from the earthquake caused about 131 deaths. Lasting four minutes and thirty-eight seconds, the magnitude 9.2 megathrust earthquake remains the most powerful earthquake recorded in North American history, and the second most powerful earthquake recorded in world history. Six hundred miles of fault ruptured at once and moved up to 60 ft, releasing about 500 years of stress buildup.
