Chase Proof Vignette & Issued Justice of the Peace Appointment Certificate with his Autograph Signature, ca.1850- 70s Ohio, ca. 1850-70s. Lot of 2 items related to Salmon P. Chase, Includes: Proof Vignette by ABNC printed on india paper, intaglio printed in black; Also included is a document from Chase’s time as Governor of Ohio, which appointed Samuel W. Reed as the Justice of the Peace for the Township of Sandusky, in the County of Sandusky, signed by Chase at bottom, Black text with Ohio state seal at top left corner, Fine but fragile condition with thin paper with tears and splitting along margins and at top center. Salmon Portland Chase ( January 13, 1808 - May 7, 1873) was a U.S. politician and jurist who served as the sixth chief justice of the United States. He also served as the 23rd governor of Ohio, represented Ohio in the United States Senate, and served as the 25th United States Secretary of the Treasury. Philadelphia, PA. “Specimen of an Improved Method of Engraving Bank Notes”, by Tanner, Kearny & Tiebout, Seated allegorical woman by shoreline with ship in the background, “Patent” in left counterfoil, Printed thin india type of paper mounted on thin manila card. Uncirculated with extremely light foxing. This three- partner imprint was very short-lived, but in that period the firm engraved and printed some beautiful banknotes. Benjamin Tanner may have studied with Peter Maverick and created some large plate engravings of War of 1812 scenes. Francis Kearny, supposedly the nephew of hero Commodore Lawrence, went back into private engraving in 1820. Cornelius Tiebout studied in London with James Heath. An India paper proof, printed to thin, wide margined card stock by Rogers & Estler (their imprint under the frame line). Flanking are oval dies with “T.K.& T.” left and “B.N.E.” at right. One of the earliest engraving company sample notes known.(Ex - Eric P. Welsh Advertising Copper Printing Plate, ND (ca.1820s). Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, ND (ca.1820’s), Copper printing plate with ornate engraved text in various fonts on 8 by 7 inch copper plate. The text states “C. (Charles) Welsh, Engraver - Philadelphia - Diplomas, Certificates, Cards etc. Engraved”. Unique copper printing plate from a new estate find and the first time ever offered in public auction. The plate is in excellent condition with evidence of previous cleanings long ago since the patina is starting to return. Lovely golden-red color, the back has Jb ( Jacob) Keim imprinted on the top margin who possibly manufactured the printing plate. ����� Est. $600-1200
