The Panic of 1873 was a financial crisis that triggered an economic depression in Europe and North America that lasted from 1873 to 1877. The Panic of 1873 and the subsequent depression had several underlying causes for which economic historians debate the relative importance. American inflation, rampant speculative investments (overwhelmingly in railroads), the demonetization of silver in Germany and the United States in 1873 and other major social issues due to wars and migration as well as the major cost due to the 1871 Great Chicago Fire and 1872, Great Boston Fire. Other factors that effected the 1873 Financial Crisis included Jay Cooke & Company’s bankruptcy in September 1873. Due to the scarcity of cash and funding due to the financial panic, circulating bonds and scrip of this type were issued to facilitate business and commerce, since the recipients would know that the bond was guaranteed at a high interest rate and would be paid at a later date, with interest only being paid every 6 months to the holder. Printed by Columbian Bank Note Company. Rare and attractive circulating bond similar to Bono de Caja’s issued by Mexican banks in the 1890s to 1910. Est. $350-550 U.S. Obsolete Store & Business Scrip Florida, Minnesota, Oregon and Other Locations 359 359 Company Store and Coupon Book Assortment, ca.1910-30s Florida, Minnesota, Oregon and Other Locations, ca.1910-30s, Lot of 7 Coupon Books from various places, Includes: FL.
